Short Description of the Herd and Mackenzie Gentleman’s Yacht
Kytra is a beautifully crafted gentleman’s yacht in an MFV, Trawler style. She was built in 1959, is ketch rigged , sleeps 8 in four cabins with three heads compartments.. She retains many of her original features and after 10 years under her present ownership is now ready for new adventures.
Kytra was the first of 13 Gentleman’s yachts built by Herd and Mackenzie during the 1950s and 60s in an MFV, trawler style. She has only had 4 owners from new and has been professionally maintained to a high standard. She is built in larch on oak frames with an aluminium deck house and teak decks. The original Gardner 6LX 114hp engine is still going strong and the engine room is much admired by anybody with an interest in these workhorse engines.
Above decks there is a wheel house, saloon with table that seats 8 and galley with 4 burner gas stove with oven and grill. Below decks she sleeps 8 in 4 twin cabins. Owners cabin is aft with a shower/bath and toilet en-suite and a vanity unit with sink in the cabin. Port cabin has twin berths and a sink. Fore-Cabin has twin berths and a toilet and sink en-suite. Starboard cabin, presently used for storage of bikes, directors chairs, cot pit table etc has twin bunk berths. Separate toilet and bath/shower compartment.
Her original owner was very involved in the design process and having appeared in Motor Boat and Yachting in 1959 and starred at the London Boat Show she crossed the Atlantic Ocean twice in the 1960s. Her second owner bought her in 1968, based her in Scotland and sold her to her third owner there in 1979. She continued to be based in Scotland for years from where she voyaged to the Baltic, Scandinavia, London and Paris and finally down to a base in Mallorca after a few years in Gibraltar, Run by a professional skipper for this 30 plus year period she was seen in most Mediterranean cruising grounds as her interesting logs record.
Her present owners bought her in 2014 having previously spent many years cruising the world in their sailing yacht. Initially they brought her back to the UK for a major refit at Nielsen’s Gloucester before returning to the Mediterranean in 2017 for a leisurely explore. Kytra has provided them with a seasonal floating home from which they have been able to explore the Mediterranean in style whilst still running their small businesses from the comfort of her saloon table and wheel house desk. It has been an amazing life style choice, the privacy of their own spacious home, the ability to visit places that many tourists can never access and the knowledge that this beautiful vessel, listed on the National Historic Ships Register, is still going strong after 65 years.
Kytra turns heads wherever she goes, loved by the Greeks and the Turks as they still have an eye for a wooden boat, she has always garnered fans wherever she anchors. She sets herself apart with her elegant lines, her quirky funnel and her vintage style and everybody goes out of their way to help, find out more and to take her photo! Although much loved by all the family, her present owners have decided that now is the time to let new owners take her on further adventures of their own. The time has come for them to swallow the anchor!
She is located in Port Yasmine Marina, Hammamet, Tunisia. This has proved to be an excellent home base out of the EU, very secure and with easy access to both Tunis and Enfidha airports for flights to UK.

Owner's Comments of the Herd and Mackenzie Gentleman’s Yacht
4 owners from new in 1959. She is a beautiful yacht with plenty of character that has turned heads wherever we have visited. The enclosed wheel house gives protection from the elements in heavy weather and we have lived aboard very happily for two long seasons each year exploring the Mediterranean as far as Turkey. A great base for water sports, exploring archaeological sites and a digital nomad life style.
