History of Azimut Powerboats and Motoryachts
In 1969 and before taking his University degree, Paolo Vitelli started his own company in Turin, Italy. The purpose of the business was to charter sailing boats. Therefore he transformed his passion into a business, becoming a renowned manufacturer of luxury motor yachts.
Amerglass, a modern Dutch shipyard producing boats in fibreglass, conferred the first dealership contract in Italy on the newly founded powerboat manufacturer Azimut. The business developed quickly, adding the distribution of sailing boats, motor cruisers and finally motor yachts from different makers: British Powles, Westerly, and others.
The first fibreglass motor cruiser, the AZ 43 BALI, was the product of a joint-venture with Amerglass and an instant success. The range of motor cruisers extended downwards with the introduction in 1977 of the AZ 32 Targa model: soon after, a full range of successful luxury motor cruiser and motoryacht models came onto the market.
In 1982 Azimut launched the Azimut 105’ Failiaka. Designed by Costaguta and Disdale, the Azimut 105’ FAILAKA was the largest fibreglass yacht at the time produced in series. Quite revolutionary in terms of design and technology, it was able to reach speeds of 32 knots. Among famous owners was the fabled Christina Onassis.
The Benetti shipyard, based in Viareggio had been owned by the Benetti family since its foundation in 1873 and in 1985 it was taken over by Azimut. The yard had earned an exceptional reputation as the boats builder in classical lines, fitted out with luxury interiors.
Unsurpassed in producing top class boats based on traditional craftsmanship, Benetti were revolutionary on account of being the first to introduce and develop the modern concept of “motor yachts”, quoting one example the: “delfino” line.
For Azimut, taking over Benetti was not just a major financial investment; it brought advanced technical expertise, development and planning methods, together with a complete revitalization of yards and plant.
In 1994, inspired by the automotive sector, and after stringent test done by skilled engineers, Azimut introduced the frameless window on the market. Thanks to a special elastic paste - capable of expanding its length eight times - the lateral windows were glued directly onto the fibreglass, without the need of any steel frame. The result was an unprecedented external design, characterized by sleek and sinuous line. The AZ 43 was the first motor cruiser to benefit from this technique.
According to the new standards, two new models came onto the market: AZ 54 and Azimut 78 Ultra. They are the first of the new Azimut generation, both designed by a passionate, young Italian designer with revolutionary ideas and style: Stefano Righini. Through the introduction of rounded shapes and elliptical windows, Azimut set the standard for design in the power boat manufacturer industry.
While the design elements have been evolving in the years, Righini was, and still is, a central figure for Azimut in building up its fame as style trendsetters in the yacht builder’s field.
In 2001, the new modern elegant industrial complex of Avigliana was opened. Built on an area of 165.000 sq.yd, of which 55.000 sq.yd are covered. It was been designed specifically to host the most advanced techniques and equipment for the production of yachts up to 68’, with tight quality control in every step of the process.
In June 2003, on the occasion of the new logo introduction ceremony, Azimut also presented to the press the new Viareggio plant. Based in the heart of Viareggio harbour, this area of 52,000 sq.yd positioned on the water’s edge allowed the Company to significantly extend the current operations. The facilities were totally re-built, the project lay-out being in line, in term of style, rationality and technological equipments, with the other Azimut – Avigliana shipyard.
The whole complex is the core of the Azimut and Benetti yachts and mega yachts production network, providing also a full maintenance and refitting centre.

The new Azimut 58 Flybridge was developed and built in the Azimut Yachts yards in Avigliana and exhibited at the 2007 Genoa International Boat Show. The Azimut 58 Flybridge, designed by Stefano Righini, has panoramas through huge expanses of glass and the new rectangular panoramic windows of the master cabin are, for the first time, designed to be opened. The large, square bow and a flybridge that cleverly unites the dining area with the sun deck are distinctive features that ensure maximum comfort. The layout of the interiors is versatile in order to provide high adaptability to owners’ needs. The "V" or sliding beds of the VIP and guest cabins, respectively, allow variable use of this part of the sleeping area. The saloon, which affords guests a striking view with minimal interference of the uprights on the large windows, can become either an area for enjoying convivial moments with guests or a relaxation zone perfectly integrated with the large, functional galley, located on a higher level together with the dining area. The luminosity of the main deck is accentuated by the light colour of the pickled oak, which gives a warm, cosy look to the internal furnishings and creates a subtle contrast of elements with the dark brown of the leather inserts.
The characteristics of the Azimut 58 exhibit a line of stylistic continuity with the Azimut 47 Flybridge presented at the 2006 Genoa Boat Show, a choice that makes Azimut Yachts models recognizable throughout the world and denotes a precise, coherent stylistic direction. Two 800mHP MAN R6 engines push the Azimut 58 Flybridge to a top speed of 32 knots.
In the area of entertainment technology, Azimut Yachts is introducing a clever new twist on this model: the "iBoat®", a system for adapting and applying the iPod™ to the yacht’s audio system. For the first time in the world on a yacht, iPod™ "application platforms" have been realized in each area of the yacht so as to enable connection to the audio system, combining the pleasure of yachting with the perfect sound track for a sea voyage.

The Azimut 62S is a sport yacht of the Azimut S range with a dual personality, where the sporting drive and freedom usually offered by open boats achieves a perfect balance with the elegance, comfort and privacy typical of flybridge models.
The challenge Azimut set itself when designing the new open boat of the S range was to create dual purpose areas in which to enjoy the wind, the sun and the open sea, but with the same privacy and comfort offered by flybridge yachts. The Azimut 68S has got it just right with its innovative new Open lifestyle.
